Not Buying It: Chocolate Syrup

Yep. I am not buying chocolate syrup anymore. It's not because I think Hershey's is too expensive or because it has too much sugar.

It's a much simpler and less controversial reason: I am lazy.

Yeah, you read that right too.

This past weekend the kids and I had a hankering for some chocolate milk and, of course, there was no chocolate syrup left in the bottle. Don't you hate that? Grabbing for a bottle in the fridge only to lift it up just a bit too quickly because the darn thing is empty. I wonder who did it... not really. I know who did it. Lucky for him, he is not here to incur my wrath.

So instead of getting everyone packed into the car, I did the next best thing a searched the internet for a solution, and a solution is exactly what I found. Within minutes, I had found a recipe and was already throwing it together and in no time we all had our chocolate milk. Crisis adverted. I even got to make use of the cute grenadine bottle I had been saving especially for purposes just like this.

I am saying writing it here and now, I am not going to buy chocolate syrup anymore, because it seriously is just easier to make it.

Homemade Chocolate Syrup
1 1/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup water
dash of salt
1 teaspoon vanilla

In a small saucepan, add sugar, cocoa, and salt. Whisk together gently. Add water. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and cook 1 minute. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Cool. Store in the refrigerator.
